Foreword
Not all mixes are created equal. Most mixes these days are thin, lifeless and lack character. One of the main factors in the replayability of a song is the timbre (pronounced tamber). If your song doesn’t have a nice timbre, people won’t be able to explain why, but they simply won’t want to hear your song again.
Likewise, if your song does have a nice timbre, they won’t be able to explain why, but they won’t be able to stop listening to it. Your song will just pop into their heads when they’re out, or they will wake up with it in their heads, it will literally play inside their souls automatically; They will just feel like they want to hear your song and look it up. This is the real goal when releasing music.
Timbre is essentially the tone or overall character that a mix has. Previously, great care was taken to ensure that each song was mixed to perfection, by engineers that have spent decades honing their craft, and using the finest analogue equipment.
These days, mixing is done entirely on computers by engineers that have not spent anywhere near a decade perfecting the art of mixing. Music is served up like fast food and the creators pay little to no attention to the most important part of the song - the sound!
As a Music Producer or Recording Artist, it’s imperative that you take care of your music, and get the right mix. Otherwise, you’re just guaranteeing that your song will either go nowhere, or, will not stand the test of time.
If you get your songs mixed properly, they will last forever. We call this ‘timeless music’. Music that still feels the same 10 years after it was released. Not many songs can claim to be timeless, but those that are, are in a whole different category.
So don’t worry about releasing tons of songs and hoping that one will blow up. Focus on creating real, timeless music and the rest will take care of itself.
